As many have predicted, the music industry’s latest phenom Mawi was named Most Popular Artiste at the Anugerah Bintang Popular-Berita Harian (ABP-BH) 2005.

For winning the night’s most prestigious award at Genting Highlands Arena of Stars, Mawi received RM125,000 cash, a Kia Optima 2.0 Special Edition, RM150,000 worth of Rafflesia pearl jewellery and a luxury stay at the Palace of the Golden Horses suite.

Mawi, who leapt to fame when he won season three of the Akademi Fantasia reality show, received 351,570 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Mawi confessed that his initial ambition was to become a deejay, but the AF win changed all that.

“I promise to do my best and excel in singing. Lots of thanks to my family and friends for all their support,” he said.

Mawi received his award from NSTP group editor-in-chief/Berita Harian Sdn Bhd group editor Datuk Hishamuddin Aun.

Mawi also won two other awards — Best Male Singer elbowing among others, veteran crooner Jamal Abdillah as well as Vince and Zahid of AF1 and AF2, respectively, as well as the Popular New Male Artiste award.

Siti Nurhaliza, reputed to be the hot favourite, won the Popular Female Singer Award.

Looking regal in her shimmering gold designer gown, she managed to include a dedication to “my special love” when accepting the award.

This remark prompted witty and humorous host Raja Azura and Sharifah Shahira to tease Siti to reveal who she was referring to.

It has been rumoured that Siti, 27, is romantically involved with a handsome Datuk and scheduled to tie the knot soon.

One big winner of the night was Rosyam Nor who took home awards for Popular TV Actor and Popular Actor.

After winning the same categories for seven straight years, Rosyam insisted that his name be excluded for the next few years.

“I am doing this to give the new breed of young actors a chance to take home this award. But I will still be active in acting as usual.”

Other winners are Aznil Haji Nawawi for Popular Male TV Presenter, Farah Fauzana (Popular Female TV Presenter), Halim Othman (Popular Male Radio Presenter), Linda Onn (Popular Female Radio Presenter), Ruff- edge (Popular Group-Duo Artiste), Rabbani (Popular Nasyid Group), Saiful Apek (Popular Male Comedian), Sheila Rusly (Popular Female Comedian), Farah of AF2 (Popular New Female Artiste), Fasha Sandha (Popular TV Actress) and Maya Karin (Popular Actress).

As for acting honours, Hussein Abu Hassan and Azean Irdawati were presented with the “Seniman Veteran” awards.

This is the first time for Hussein, who has been acting and producing for 45 years.

“This is so special to me and hopefully it will spur my children and grandchildren who are active in acting to carry on,” said Hussein who had to be aided up on stage by daughter Dilla and actor Rosyam Nor.

The dazzling event was also filled with songs by a line up of popular names including superstar Anita Sarawak, Jaclyn Victor, Hazami, Adibah Noor, Zahid, Ning Baizura, Zainal Abidin and Mentor reality singing contest winner, Pija.

Wrapping up the show were Mawi and sifu M. Nasir who gave a high energy performance singing their chart topper duet collaboration Lagu Jiwa Lagu Cinta.

Tanpa Nama berkata...

Malam tu persembahan M.Nasir & Mawi menarik gak. Mawi & M.Nasir nampak macam teruja. Mungkin sebab Mawi menang Bintang paling popular kot....tu yang sampai M.Nasir sampai terlupa lirik tu.hihihihihi dulu dia kata Mawi terlupa lirik, ni lagu dia sendiri pun dia lupa gak. (nasib baik adik Mawi cover utk sifu) Apa pun Sifu cuma manusia biasa tak jauh dari membuat kesilapan.
