Mawi delivers
By AZHARIAH KAMIN

Fun and entertaining. That’s two words that came to mind right after watching singer Mawi in his first major concert at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil last Sunday.

The concert titled Konsert Fantasia Mawi was held to celebrate Mawi’s first anniversary in the music industry after being crowned champion of Akademi Fantasia 3 last August.

For a solid two-and-a-half hours, Mawi tried his best to entertain fans who had turned up in droves; many carrying banners professing how much they adored and loved the star who shot to fame during the reality series’ run last year.

Mawi opened his concert with the highly-popular Aduh Saliha before moving on to Kian and Perempuan. As expected, in his fans’ eyes, he could do no wrong.

A little gesture here, a few words there by the 26-year-old phenomenon drew thunderous applause and screams from the crowd.

The entertainment continued with Mawi’s duet performances with Nor Salima Habidi – better known as Salima (a student of the just-completed Akademi Fantasia 4) – in an Arabic number entitled Tamally Maak. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any chemistry between the two singers, which left the audience a little dissatisfied.

But things started to look up when Mawi’s next guests – the legendary nasyid group Raihan – took to the stage.

This time, the teaming up was more successful – their vocals complemented nicely on Iqra (originally sung by Ramli Sarip).

Next up, Nor Farhan Azizan or Farhan, the AF4 second runner-up, turned up to perform Fly Me to the Moon, a duet with Mawi. Though the performance was a bit amateurish, it was entertaining.

But for this seasoned entertainment reporter, the highlight of the concert was when Mawi called on his idols, the unrivalled Jamal Abdillah and the charismatic M. Nasir.

It was so pleasant to see how established singers such as Jamal and Nasir treated the young star with brotherly respect on stage. There was even a bit of comical banter to lighten things up.

Jamal and Mawi brought the house down with a rock version of Gadis Melayu (originally made popular by Othman Hamzah), complete with four dancers clad in beautiful kebaya and batik sarong.

Despite his established presence in the music industry, Jamal humbly said that he was honoured to share the stage with Mawi.

“I’m a bit jealous of you, Mawi. All the fans who are here tonight, they are here to see you and not me,” teased Jamal.

Much to the audience’s delight, Jamal performed Seroja, to prove to the masses that his vocal prowess remains unrivalled after all these years. Jamal still rules!

If that was not enough, Mawi joined in on another fast-paced, all-time favourite tune, Terharu (made popular by now-defunct rock outfit Sweet Charity), which sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Then came “Datuk M” – well, that’s how Mawi referred to the person who was responsible for making him what he is today.

“This person is very special in my life. He is a teacher and a brother who has taught me a lot about the entertainment industry.

“He has such a big and generous heart. Ladies and gentlemen, my sifu M. Nasir.”

Nasir had the audience in stitches when he commented on how Mawi had changed in just over a year.

“This young guy is very chatty now. He was very shy before ? he couldn’t even talk on stage! He can even dance a bit now!” teased Nasir.

To everyone’s delight, Nasir and Mawi then launched into glorious rendition of songs (solos and a duet) that included Sang Pencipta, Juwita Citra Terindah and Lagu Jiwa Lagu Cinta.

Just as Jamal reappeared, Mawi jokingly asked choreographer Lan to teach them both some dance routines on the spot.

As expected, the duo performed Jamal’s popular song Kekasih Awal Dan Akhir before Nasir joined them to perform a powerful rendition of the award-winning Ghazal Untuk Rabiah (made popular by Jamal and M. Nasir).

That was surely a fitting finale to a night that was filled with fun
